Sadly, Loka, our 30-year old Komodo dragon has passed away.
She arrived in 2014 from the Toronto Zoo and was under veterinary care as a geriatric animal. During the last 10 days her appetite dropped away, and following diagnostic work and end of life care, she passed away on July 25, 2016. She will be missed by all who cared for her.
Loka had become a well-known animal in the Eurasian Gateway building as she was the world’s oldest Komodo dragon in captivity. Currently there are estimated to be only 3,000 – 5,000 Komodo dragons left in the wild. They are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
