India is one of the five countries where the highest number of children aged under five years die of preventable causes, Unicef’s latest assessment shows. The other countries are Nigeria, Pakistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia.
In 2015, India recorded an under-five mortality rate of around 48 deaths per 1,000 live births. Around 1.26 million children aged below five years die in the country every year, and, according to estimates, 57% of the deaths are caused by prematurity and neonatal infections.
