Today, the main concern of the world, as put forth by the UN, is the rising pollution level. The alarming situation in Delhi forced the government to try the odd-even vehicle rule as a remedial measure. Here we list the least polluted places in India for you to explore and take deep, fresh breaths.
1. Kollam, Kerala
As per the recent survey conducted by WHO of over 1,600 cities around the world, including 123 Indian cities, Kollam has been ranked as second when it comes to least polluted places in India. Pathanamthitta ranks first in the same state.
2. Hassan, Karnataka
Ranked as the third least polluted city in India by the WHO, Hassan’s concentration of Particulate Matter with a diameter of 10 micron was recorded to be 44 micro-grams per cubic meter of air which is way less than New Delhi with PM10 at 286 micro-grams per cubic meter.
Puducherry has seen a very pleasing shift in terms of air and noise pollution in the recent times as reported by a renowned national newspaper. A number of NGOs and initiatives by the government have helped a lot in the process.
4. Madurai, Tamil Nadu
Madurai is also one of the five cities declared to be least polluted in India by the WHO. Although vehicular emissions have seen a rise, yet the coping strategy regarding the same has been quite appreciable.
Central Pollution Control Board came up with a ranking of 52 Indian cities from the most polluted to the least polluted. Chennai captured the 52nd spot and was also categorized as the cleanest city in the country.
Bengaluru stands at the 43rd position in the same ranking with a RSPM count of 71mg/cubic meter. The city has also topped charts for becoming one of the safest places for patients with respiratory problems due to the commendable quality of air.
7. Agartala, Tripura
Agartala lies in the North-east as the capital of Tripura. The city is lush green with a good amount of carbon dioxide soaking agents. Its pollution free air is one of the reasons that it attracts tourists from big cities.
8. Gandhinagar, Gujarat
This city of Gujarat is considered a green city, not only in India, but on an international level as well. Gandhinagar has about 32 lakh trees planted all over to keep pollution levels (especially air pollution) down.
9. Malappuram, Kerala
The district of Malappuram is endowed with natural beauty. With small lush green hills and fresh water streaming alongside, this place offers a very healthy and pollution free environment for its residents and visitors.
10. Shillong, Meghalaya
Shillong is the capital of the small hill state of Meghalaya in the north-eastern region of the country. This place has a very pleasant climate almost throughout the year. The summers especially are warm yet pollution-free.
