According to a Spanish study, energy drinks increase the risk of suffering from insomnia and nervousness. And that, even hours after an athletic event.
Popular with young people, the so-called energy drinks might be more harmful than they look. Already accused of damaging heart cells and promoting diseases including cardiac arrhythmia, energy drinks are now accused of causing insomnia and restlessness.
However, the Spanish team also found beneficial effects of these energy drinks. Their study show an increase in performance between 3 to 7%, depending on the athlete.
