In a bid to ride out the political storm brewing over the alleged involvement of the two TMC Rajya Sabha MPs in the Sarada chit fund scam, the TMC has questioned the role of senior counsel Nalini Chidambaram, wife of Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, in fixing deals in the mega scam.
Making a thinly-veiled reference to Nalini, the TMC website on Thursday sought to know,”Why was a Chennai lady lawyer fixing deals in the Saradha scam? The Congress minister must clarify.” Saradha Group CMD Sudipto Sen had mentioned Nalini in his letter addressed to the CBI dated April 6.
After accusing TMC MPs Kunal Ghosh and Srinjoy Bose of blackmailing and extorting money from him, Sen had mentioned that Nalini had served as legal counsel to Manoranjana Sinh. “Madam Chidambaram requested me to help her to set up a channel in the North-East (in Guwahati) and support her by extending Rs 42 crore to her (Manoranjana’s) company”.
Sen also revealed that he had paid “more than Rs 1crore” to Nalini over a one-and-a-half year period as consultancy fees. He had also revealed that Manoranjana was the former wife of Matang Sinh, a minister in the erstwhile P V Narasimha Rao-led Congress Government.
